When it comes to division of the genders there is one thing that is clear: an inherently male predisposition is for the understanding and appreciation of sports where an inherently female predisposition is to lose interest, become agitated with, and never fully appreciate the support that maybe even put bread on her table. I always get a little bit of a kick whenever they zoom in on a family of a player at say a baseball game. It's almost like the announcers and the e-mails watching are in on this joke that it's this players family never comes, but this one occasion.
It's sort of too bad as we move from this hyper specialized world of what people are good at from a very young age that we don't encourage things like sports; or, more accurately demand it. Maybe it's the truths and maybe it's just my perception but it seems that European kids are more well rounded than American kids. Part of this has to do with my perception of the fact that Europeans tolerate a lot less. I'm not saying that none of the kids fall through the cracks as it were, but it seems that this there is a lot more structure in their schooling from a very young age. Where in America, land of the free, we are encouraged to just do whatever we want to in two what feels right and feel like it's okay if we fail at everything because we’re still good people. That's all very interesting, but the truth is that a kid who's never thrown a baseball for or hit a free throw or even passed a Nerf ball around is really missing out on something. For this reason and others at places like Sports Authority exists. Kids sports is still a booming business. From sporting equipment and sports wear to the more nuanced aspects of sporting games, there is a huge business out there still even in America. And while I'm very impressed with people like Tiger Woods, I really wish he would get up on the basketball court with Michael Jordan and shoot a little bit, even if it was just around of HORSE. The sports we play end up defining the people we are. I think that's beautiful and sad. If we had more diversity in our education system and replace more of a value on physical activity, kids may get a lot more out of school and look towards their academic careers with enthusiasm rather than having school just be have something they have to get through to get to real life.
