The music industry is in a state of panic. There are in flux right now. There is no regular paying for music. With something like iTunes, free music downloads, and still we have CDs, cassette tapes, and even things like records or reel-to-reel with people listening to them still it's sort of a clash of old against new. But as we all move to the towards the digital format and we all move away from the older, more cumbersome aspects of the music business, we are forced to reevaluate our perception of how business is conducted and everything else that has changed about the music business.
To start, I believe it began with free music downloads. Even after the advent of the computer and all the things which are transpired to that point, I didn't feel like the CD was under any attack. Then came Napster. Once people started realizing they could take their digital files and share them with just friends or the whole world there was an increased sensitivity to the fact that the music business had changed forever. Free music on the Internet was the first step. Some people view it as the decline of civilization. I wouldn't go that far, however, I'd say that there is certainly a different mood in the world's since this has happened. Then came the iPod. The iPod was another way to further negate something like this CD. And you saw it in the record stores as well. CDs went from prices around $12 or $15 to $18 or $20; new release is no longer got sale prices or got sale prices for much shorter periods of time. The way of doing business against something so powerful as the iPod changed. And now, the consumer can go online and pay $9.99 and get the whole CD or could pay $.99 and buy just the one song they liked off the record. In short, the business model had changed. With online music for free and music stores available online for lesser than retail stores, the equation had changed. And many people were uncomfortable with this. Namely record producers and the major companies. As you seen, the industry has reacted out against us. Virgin records? Who? I predict in short time more of this will change or online prices will rise and pirating will resume again all over the place. We’ll see. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
