With the increase in crime nowadays, more and more people have gone out to purchase guns to protect themselves and their family. The unfortunate part of this is that major accidents have happened because the gun fell into the wrong hands. If you still want to own a gun and have children within your household at any time, then you should practice extreme safety tips to decrease the chances of those life threatening accidents that can occur.
A gun owner should be the ONLY one that ever handles the gun. It’s meant to be a symbol of protection or for hunting during certain animal seasons. It is not to be used for target practice on animals or as a toy for children. It should be kept in a safe locked area that cannot be accessed by anyone other than you and maybe one other responsible adult within the home. Some young children can think that no harm can come by firing a real gun at their friend. Unfortunately, they find out that it’s not true after it’s’ too late. Guns shouldn’t be loaded until it’s needed. If you’re a hunter, load your gun when you get to the site that you will be hunting at. Loaded guns cause accidents, so be sure to practice safety when loading your guns. Of course, accidents with guns can happen away from your home as well. If you have young children, teach them about gun safety. Explain in simple terms what guns can do and that they should never ever touch them no matter what. Talk about examples they may come across like a friend of theirs pulls out a gun from their parent’s room. Tell your child what he/she should do in that situation like leave the room and find an adult right away and tell them. It’s important to teach them safety, but not give gory details about what can happen that will give them nightmares. If you routinely teach your kids about gun safety then hopefully, they will know what to do if they should happen to come across a situation like the ones you discussed with them. Don’t forget to add scenarios of other places like school, etc. Gun accidents can happen anywhere. If you choose to be a gun owner learn some gun safety tips to prevent any accidents that occur from owning a gun.
